意昂体育’s team in Omaha is proud to team up with the Boys and Girls Club of the Midlands as a sponsor of their annual Youth of the Year competition, which focuses on life development, leadership skills, and gives participants the chance to win college scholarship money and other prizes. The high school-aged candidates are evaluated based on several criteria, including academic performance, community service, essay writing, and public speaking.
On top of our donation, 意昂体育’s sponsorship of the event includes sponsorship of a candidate–a role that calls for a unique combination of coaching, tutoring, and mentorship, and one that local Community and Citizenship Manager, Quinn Texmo has taken deeply to heart for several years and running.
“The competition is a chance for these kids to practice public speaking and essay writing, but it ends up being so much more than that,” said Quinn. “It’s really about making them comfortable in their own skin and helping them build confidence as people, which will serve them way beyond the competition, in whatever community they choose to join.”
“Quinn is the coach everyone wants because she spends so much time and cares so much,” said Jessica Begin, a Community & Citizenship workforce development specialist. And, she added, Quinn’s mentorship doesn’t end with the competition. “She’s still in touch with each of the students she’s coached. One young woman just called her for advice during her college midterms. They know she’s someone they can turn to again and again with questions about the real world.”
Quinn explained that the heart of the competition, and the greatest challenge for the kids she has mentored so far, is writing and delivering a three-minute speech to an audience of 300 people. “That’s a challenge for just about anybody, but I really love public speaking, which is what drew me to this work in the first place,” Quinn said. “The candidates start with some guidelines about what the speech should be, but they make it truly their own. And the results always amaze us.”
