The constructed building features 180-degree views of the airfield with an indoor deck and outdoor terrace, as well as core and shell space for a future café and Alaska Airlines Lounge. The observation deck is the final milestone of a four-year, $85 million project that contained make ready projects such as upgrading the airfield lighting infrastructure, adding a boarding bridge gate to Terminal 2 and demolishing the existing 1954 Original Traffic Control Tower on top of an active terminal. Òâ°ºÌåÓý led the design-build process for this project, hiring the joint venture architect team of Woods Bagot and AE3 Partners.

The technical and safety challenges were vast — the entirety of Terminal 2 was seismically deficient and needed to be upgraded and additional floors needed to be added to the old steel structure. The project entailed the use of Fiber Reinforced Polymers, 660-feet of large concrete collector beams overhead in existing spaces, upgraded existing columns in the public and baggage areas and the installation of Sideplate bolted moment frame connections. Protecting the public and the operations of the Terminal was the team’s number one priority, and this was achieved by working mostly at night and setting up 20 different zones of work.
